Christmas Rock – South Africa

Hi Everyone!

I know it has been years. How are you all doing???

Here is a little post about a place called Christmas Rock on the East Coast of South Africa. Please go easy on me as I am a little “blog” rusty so, I hope that you like it.

PACK THE CAR WE ARE GOING TO THE SEA SIDE!

What a fantastic break! Definitely well worth the 1000 Kilometer drive from Johannesburg to the Eastern Cape. I find with small kids its best to drive at night as much as possible, have breakfast on the way and chill on the first day if possible 🙂

The Christmas Rock itself used to be a caravan park which closed down about 30 years ago. Probably because of it being very secluded and off the beaten track.  The people who owned stands there stuck around and built houses and it became the community it is today. Consisting of lots of friendly old people that have had way too much sun. The village is surrounded by nature reserve there is no room for the community to grow,  get taken over by holiday makers or become commercialized. This is awesome if you want to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle. I simply loved it here.

The beaches go on for miles and miles with practically no people in sight. There are also scattered rocky parts that are filled with life and color. We even caught an Octopus!

It is quite incredible how standing on a quiet beach can give you some perspective.

South African Big Sky Panorama

Had a little fun with this one. The photos used to construct this “Big Sky Panorama” were taken on top of the Moses Mabhida Stadium yesterday with my trusty blogging camera and merged together using Photoshop CS4.

I would like to give Don Charisma a shout for always being an inspiration and I believe I got the whole Big Sky idea from his blog. Head over there for loads of brilliant images.

Hope you enjoy…

South African Aquarium

I took my family and the trusty point and shoot Pentax to uShaka today. I love it here! So many colors and things to look at. Pity about the no flash rule inside the aquarium but I totally understand the havoc that constant camera flashing would cause with the ecosystems and creatures within Marine World.

Please excuse the quality of these photos, not the best lighting and no real opportunity to set up each shot to get the best effects. Just quick on the trot :point and shoot” fun stuff today.

South African Rhino Poaching

Hi Friends.

Great to be on holiday and have some time to pick things up a bit on TherandomG. It is a rainy day here in Durban but my excited boys insisted on going for a walk along the promenade anyway. That is when we stumbled across this…

Lucas comes down to the beach everyday and builds his display. I am hoping that he changes it up a little while I am here so I can take more photos of his work. It seems like a lot of labor just for the right to put a bucket on the floor and rely on tips from passers by. I really hope that people support him and he makes a decent living from this. I think it’s fantastic!

As for South African Rhino Poaching, I must admit that I am embarrassed and angry at the whole state of affairs regarding the demise of this awesome creature. I mean, the various initiatives and events dedicated to saving the Rhino must have generated millions by now and still we have lost 588 animals this year alone. What about the thousands of guys running around with guns that would probably shoot a poacher on site? Pity we can’t pay them some of these proceeds to go put a few heads on poles. That will show the bastards.

Lastly to all those that are dedicated to the conservation of the Rhino. TherandomG solutes you, I hope that this and surrounding governments actually catch a bit of a clue and exercise a little leadership and get you the support you need. I wonder what our army do all day long? Dangit, do we even have an army?

OK that’s it for this one.

As always.
Love and Respect.

A Blogging Camera for the South African – Pentax Optio WG2

Funny title I know, Google will probably like it a lot more than you do so let’s leave it at that. I have been wanting to do a post on my Pentax Optio WG2 for quite some time now. This camera definitely deserves a shout… Continue reading A Blogging Camera for the South African – Pentax Optio WG2

Pilgrims Rest – Old Car

Have you ever been to Pilgrims Rest in South Africa? It is like the final frontier. I mean, this place is like a museum! A small olden day mining town in the mountainous region of Mpumalanga, formally known as Eastern Transvaal.

Generally the going here is pretty tough and I can’t help but to wonder what it must have been like living during the gold rush that happened in these parts all those years back. Driving vehicles like this and using technology that, well, no – there was no tech back then. 🙂

Take a look at this car, it ran for 20 years or so. How did they get spares to service and maintain for such a long time before it finally gave in to the environment? I think that people must have been pretty tough and resourceful back then.

South African Spider Web

I suppose these could be from anywhere but for Google’s sake and the fact that I took these photos at the Vaal Dam over the weekend, let’s leave the title as is? These photos were taken with a “point and shoot” Pentax camera and to my surprise I actually had an huge fun playing with it. Thanks LJ 🙂 Continue reading South African Spider Web
